An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code based on ISO 17442. It works like an international business passport, identifying legal entities that take part in financial transactions.
The code connects your company to a public record of its legal name, registered address and ownership information. Banks, brokers and regulators use it to identify the same entity across borders.
Learn more at GLEIFAn LEI code consists of 20 characters that uniquely identify a legal entity worldwide.
An LEI helps financial institutions identify your organisation and meet reporting requirements. Whether you need one depends on your activities, the financial instruments involved and the rules that apply to you.
OÜ, Ltd, GmbH, Inc. and other companies investing or participating in reportable financial transactions.
Funds, trusts and other eligible investment structures that need a verified identity for financial transactions.
Banks, investment firms, brokers and other institutions with identification and reporting obligations.
Eligible international branches may obtain their own LEI under the applicable branch rules, linked to their head office.
Legal entities need an LEI when an EU investment firm executes transactions for them that are subject to MiFIR reporting, including relevant shares, bonds and derivatives. This is often called “No LEI, No Trade”.
LEIs identify counterparties in derivatives reporting under EMIR and securities financing reporting under SFTR. CSDR also requires LEIs for relevant securities market participants and issuers.
DORA uses entity identifiers in registers of ICT service arrangements; EU ICT providers may use an LEI or EUID where permitted. MiCA also uses LEIs in crypto-asset service provider identification. The requirement depends on your role and jurisdiction.

A LOU is an accredited LEI issuer. Intermediaries help you apply through an issuer. Processing times, discounts, transfer conditions and support availability vary by provider; compare the current terms before ordering.
An LEI (Legal Entity Identifier) is a unique 20-character code based on ISO 17442. It identifies the same legal entity across countries and connects it to a public record of verified reference data. It does not replace your national company registration number or VAT number. Your entity keeps its LEI when it renews the record or changes LEI service provider.
The requirement depends on the transactions your company carries out. An EU investment firm needs a legal-entity client's LEI before executing transactions that fall under MiFIR reporting, such as relevant trades in shares, bonds or derivatives. LEIs are also used in other financial reporting regimes. Registering an OÜ or AS alone does not create a universal LEI requirement. Ask your bank or broker which requirements apply to your intended transactions.
LEIs are available to eligible legal entities and investment structures, including companies, funds and trusts. The issuer must cover the entity's jurisdiction and type, and be able to verify its existence. Foreign entities can use an issuer accredited for their jurisdiction; the issuer does not have to be based in the same country. Funds and trusts may need additional constitutional or registry documents.
Prepare the entity's legal name, registration number, country, registered address, headquarters address and the representative's contact details. Review any information filled in from a registry. We may request a registry extract, evidence of signing authority or documents supporting the entity's structure when public records are insufficient. For renewal or transfer, also provide the existing LEI.
LEI relationship data identifies the direct and ultimate parents that consolidate the entity in their financial statements. This is based on accounting consolidation, so a shareholder is not automatically a reportable parent. If no qualifying parent exists, an applicable reporting exception must be recorded; ownership solely by individuals is one possible reason. Where a parent is reportable, its identity and the relationship may require supporting financial statements or other evidence.
A company representative or someone acting with the entity's permission can prepare the application. The authorisation must be signed by a person entitled to represent the entity, following its signing rules. If you prepare the application for somebody else, enter the correct representative details. We may request evidence of authority or additional signatures before forwarding the application for issuance.
Completing the online application is separate from issuing the LEI. Review and validation depend on payment, the signed authorisation, available registry information and any requested documents. Straightforward cases can be processed more quickly; funds, complex group structures or additional issuer checks may take longer. Any displayed processing time is an estimate. We will contact you if further information is needed.
The application shows the current price for the service and the selected 1, 3 or 5-year package. For a multi-year package, the annual equivalent helps you compare plans; the full package total is the amount payable. Review the final quote, applicable VAT and any additional charges before paying. Renewal pricing can differ from the initial registration price.
First review the company details, package and final amount, then choose a payment method available at checkout. Cards and supported digital wallets are offered where available; some methods may not support automatic renewal. After payment, follow the instructions to review and sign the authorisation online. Payment alone does not issue an LEI: the authorisation and the entity's information must still be checked.
Eesti Firma OÜ is your Registration Agent (LEI 2549006RA6TCO1KHOJ54). Your LEI is validated, issued and maintained by WM Datenservice, the responsible Local Operating Unit (LOU, LEI 5299000J2N45DDNE4Y28).
Annual renewal revalidates the entity's reference data so that banks and other users can rely on current information. Check the next renewal date in your LEI record and confirm any changes to the company's details and parent relationships. Renewal updates the existing record; it does not give you a different LEI. A multi-year service package still includes annual validation.
A multi-year package includes annual LEI maintenance during the paid service period. It does not turn the LEI record into a single registration valid for several years without review. You remain responsible for keeping your details accurate and supplying any information needed for annual checks. The upfront package payment and an optional payment for the next package are separate.
Review the automatic renewal option before payment. When enabled, it authorises a future payment for the next package under the terms shown at checkout. You can manage automatic renewal in your account and disable future payments. Turning it off does not remove annual maintenance already included in your paid period. If it is off, arrange the next service period before the LEI's renewal becomes due.
Yes. A transfer changes who manages the existing LEI, while the code stays the same. Select the transfer service and provide your current LEI and the required authorisation. A free transfer on its own preserves the current renewal date and adds no paid service period or automatic payment. Transfer and renewal are separate operations; if renewal is also needed, review that service and its price. Timing depends on the current provider and any checks.
LAPSED means the LEI's reference data was not revalidated by the scheduled renewal date. It does not mean the company has ceased to exist, and you should not apply for a second LEI for the same entity. Renew the existing record with current information. Whether a lapsed record is acceptable depends on the transaction and the institution using it; check with your bank or broker before trading.
Tell your LEI service provider when the entity's reference data or reportable parent relationships change, rather than waiting for the next annual renewal. Updated registry records or supporting documents may be required. A name or address change for the same legal entity normally updates its existing LEI record. Mergers, dissolution and other changes to legal identity need a separate assessment, so contact us before submitting a new registration.
Search the free GLEIF LEI database by company name or the 20-character code. Compare the legal name, registered address and registration number, then check the LEI registration status, managing issuer and next renewal date. The public record also includes reportable parent relationships or the relevant reporting exceptions. An LEI provides a shared global identifier; it is not a credit rating, financial licence or guarantee of solvency.
